This Week's Stories:
1. The End of Computing:
Fri, Jan 13, 2023, 2 PM – 3 PM PST (GMT-8), Donald Bren Hall, 6011, University of California, Irvine, Irvine, CA 92697, and online. The speaker Geoffrey Bowker will discuss three broad rubrics for tracking the history and future of computing. First, he will explore computing and nature – analyzing several attempts to naturalize the computer. Second, he will look at computing and time, arguing that we (humans) are moving into uncharted ontological territory. Third, he will examine classification and computing. He will conclude with grounds for optimism.
2. New quantum computing architecture could be used to connect large-scale devices:
Researchers have demonstrated directional photon emission, the first step toward extensible quantum interconnects.
3. This is your brain. This is your brain on code:
MIT researchers are discovering which parts of the brain are engaged when a person evaluates a computer program.
4. Cybersecurity Innovation for Cyberinfrastructure (CICI) Program Webinar:
January 10, 2023 - Webcast 12-1PM EST. This webinar will provide an overview of NSF's Cybersecurity Innovation for Cyberinfrastructure (CICI) program and the current CICI solicitation (NSF 23-517; proposal deadline February 17, 2023). The CICI program supports research on securing scientific data, workflows and infrastructure in three focus areas: usable and collaborative security for science; reference scientific security datasets; and transition to cyberinfrastructure resilience. NSF program officers will detail the CICI program objectives, program areas, solicitation review criteria, proposal requirements, and submission procedures. Time will be allotted at the end of the presentation to answer questions from potential proposers.
