Friday Five for September 27th, 2024

1. Google Workspace Service Adjustments

UCLA is implementing significant changes to its Google Workspace services to optimize data storage and enhance security.  Starting September 5, 2024, accounts exceeding their Permanent Baseline Quotas were disabled, and by October 1, 2024, these accounts will be deleted if they remain non-compliant, resulting in loss of all email and files.

This initiative follows Google’s 2021 announcement ending unlimited storage for Google Workspace for Education, with UCLA’s compliance deadline set for November 1, 2024. Users are encouraged to review their storage usage and take necessary actions to avoid disruptions.

UCLA has set specific storage quotas for different user groups as part of their Google Workspace adjustments, learn more about Permanent Baseline Quotas.

Get a detailed explanation here on how you could be affected and learn about the steps to take to avoid or mitigate service interruptions.

3. Workshop: New Platform for Building 3D Virtual Environments

Are you interested in creating and publishing 3D virtual environments on the Web? Join the upcoming workshop to learn foundational techniques and resources for producing WebXR (eXtended Reality) content.  This workshop will explore two new alternatives: Mud Verse and 8XR to Mozilla’s WebXR platform, Mozilla Hubs, and builder, Spoke which are now sunsetted.

Mud Verse, supported by the MUD Foundation, allows for Spoke file imports and operates similarly to Mozilla Hubs. 8XR, an HTML5 native game engine, offers enhanced interactivity for published environments. Participants will learn to find 3D resources, import and arrange visual assets, integrate multimedia, publish virtual environments, and navigate XR spaces interactively.

No prior technical experience is necessary, and all levels are welcome.

Register for the upcoming workshop "New Platforms for Building Virtual 3D Environments: Replacement Platforms for Mozilla Hubs” to be held on Zoom on October 9th from 11:30 am - 1:30pm.

4. Google Striding Towards Passwordless Future

Google Chrome has introduced a new feature that simplifies the use of passkeys across multiple devices, moving closer to a passwordless future. Previously, users had to scan QR codes to grant access to other devices, but now passkeys can be saved directly to the Google Password Manager on Windows, MacOS, Linux, and Android. This update allows passkeys to sync automatically across all devices when logged into the same Google account.

To enhance security, Google has also introduced a Password Manager PIN, ensuring passkeys are end-to-end encrypted. This advancement makes it easier and more secure to sign in to websites and apps using biometric data or a screen lock.
