1. October is Cyber Security Awareness Month 

This October, UCLA is focusing on practical strategies to safeguard personal and institutional data. The month started with a kickoff event at Bruin Plaza featuring interactive activities and assisting students, staff and faculty in registering for 1Password, a secure password manager.  

Visit the Office of the Chief Information Security Officer to get more information on the various resources available to make our digital world safer.

University of California is also emphasizing the critical role of AI in cybersecurity. This year’s theme, “Protect Your Digital Life – Be CyberSafe,” highlights how AI can both defend against and be used in cyberattacks. 

The UC system is hosting various events, including knowledge contests and phishing mitigation programs, to educate and engage the community.

3. Technology and Law

Technology is significantly transforming societies impacting privacy and public policies.  UCLA Law's Institute for Technology, Law & Policy, a collaboration with UCLA Samueli School of Engineering, explores the impact of advances on privacy, justice and the law.   

The Institute for Technology, Law & Policy hosts one-hour, bi-weekly Tech Talks each semester. The series features experts in the tech and law space, and includes lunch for pre-registered attendees.

4. Docker Containerization

Containerization has revolutionized software deployment.  The Office of Advanced Research Computing (OARC) is conducting a workshop that will cover the fundamental concepts and uses of Docker containerization.  focusing on its four main components: image, container, data volume, and network.  The workshop will also explore how to create a Dockerfile and deploy applications from your local computer to cloud services.

The workshop will be held on October 10th, 2024 from 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
