1. Reminder: Join the #SecureUCLA Town Hall with the FBI

 

OCISO is thrilled to invite you to the finale of their 2023 Cybersecurity Awareness Month, the #SecureUCLA Town Hall! This virtual town hall features a guest speaker from the FBI and will take place on October 26 at 12:30PM - 1:45PM (PST). During the event, you will:

  • Gain insights into cybersecurity challenges faced by education institutions and their faculty/staff.
  • Hear lessons learned from cyber incidents at other organizations.
  • Learn best practices to keep yourself safe online.

2. Design Systems for Developers

 

UCLA Strategic Communications invites BruinTech members to join them at their upcoming workshop dedicated to covering the practical use of their new UCLA Design System. This workshop will review documentation, explore component code, discuss browser-testing best practices, and showcase real-world implementations. StratComm will also discuss their criteria for anyone interested in contributing to the design system.

3. Data Science Jamboree & Lightning Talks Watch Party

 
 

The UCLA Charles E. Young Research Library is hosting a watch party for the upcoming American Statistical Association mini-symposium “Statistical Computing in Action.” The mini-symposium will feature a data jamboree for R, Python, and Julia, as well as lightning talks and a panel on open source software. Come to meet fellow data science enthusiasts over some coffee and donuts!

When: Saturday, November 4, 2023, 9AM - 1PM (PST)

4. Apple Technology Update for Campus IT

The UCLA Computer Store invites BruinTech members to join them and Apple, Inc. systems engineer Tim Parker for an on-campus IT technical presentation covering recent Apple platform updates. The presentation will address deployment, management, and security, as well as an exciting update to identity management. 

Lunch will be provided, so RSVP as soon as possible!

5. CITRIS Research Exchange: Independent Community-rooted AI Research

For the final speech of the recent four-part Fall 2023 CITRIS Research Exchange seminar series, Timnit Gebru will be speaking on how the Distributed AI Research Institute (DAIR) aims to subvert AI trends prevalent in Big Tech corporations. As DAIR’s founder and executive director, Gebru will explain how employing smaller task-specific models can both outperform corporate models and distribute power across grassroots organizations. Although the in-person event is fully booked, you can still catch the livestream on YouTube! Previous talks can also be found on their YouTube page.
