1. Q&A with Drake Chang on AI and Cybersecurity

Drake Chang, UCLA’s Chief Information Security Officer

In a recent interview with the Daily Bruin, Drake Chang, UCLA’s Chief Information Security Officer, discussed the importance of cybersecurity practices amid the rise of AI technologies. Chang emphasized that while AI can enhance security measures, it also introduces new vulnerabilities that need to be addressed.  He described how being a part of the UC systems and the Big Ten has allowed for collaboration and sharing of intelligence across multiple campuses has enhanced collective security efforts.

Chang also shared practical tips during the interview:

  • Use a password manager, and use complex, unique passwords.
  • Review and adjust your social media privacy settings to ensure you are not sharing more information than intended.
  • If something looks suspicious while browsing websites and looking at emails do not hesitate to report to Information Security Office.  Send an email to security@ucla.edu
  • Do not connect to any open wireless networks; they can be easily intercepted and monitored.

Thread

UCLA's Cybersecurity Awareness Month 2023 focuses on "Securing Your Loved Ones." This initiative highlights the importance of protecting family and friends from cyber threats, especially since many people lack formal cybersecurity training.  Be an advocate of cyber security and spread awareness among your loved ones.

The campaign emphasizes defending against social engineering attacks, which exploit human psychology rather than technical vulnerabilities. It also provides tips for safe social media interactions and secure travel practices to protect sensitive data. The goal is to empower individuals to support each other in navigating the risks associated with digital connectivity.

4. Windows 10 Security Updates Poised to Stop in a Year

Starting October 14, 2025, Microsoft will cease security updates for Windows 10, affecting a large number of PCs1. While organizations and individuals can pay for extended updates for three more years, the cost would increase steadily. This end-of-support is notable because Windows 10 remains widely used, with nearly two-thirds of active Windows systems still running on it, and the time period between replacement and retirement of Windows 10 is just 4 years, as compared to 7 years when Windows 7 or Windows 8 was replaced.

Many PCs, especially those released before 2018, cannot upgrade to Windows 11 due to hardware requirements. This situation is unprecedented compared to previous Windows versions, where hardware upgrades were more straightforward. As a result, many users may need to consider alternative solutions or new hardware
